JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Sonar Research and Development Division is seeking a Research and Development Engineer with a background in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or physics. We are working to develop the next generation sonar systems and sonar signal processing algorithms for a range of Naval applications. Our teams research areas include active sonar, synthetic aperture sonar, acoustic navigation techniques, acoustic remote sensing, sonar image classification, and sonar system modeling. ARL/Penn State’s purpose is to develop innovative solutions to challenging national problems in support of the Navy, DoD, and Intel communities engineering and technology needs.

You will

  • Develop sonar research software and signal processing algorithms that interface with new and novel sensors and arrays

  • Test and evaluate ultra wide band, high fidelity active and passive sonar systems in laboratory and field environments

  • Advance cutting edge sonar technology from initial research experiments to fully functional prototype systems

  • Support system and component level demonstrations with national and international collaborators

This job will be filled at the intermediate or advanced professional level, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Minimally requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline or higher plus two years’ related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for the intermediate professional level. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science is preferred.

Additional responsibilities for the higher-level include:

  • Manage sonar research projects of small or moderate size and scope

  • Author or co-author papers, proposals, presentations, and reports on research efforts in department

  • Mentor and train employees in the development of technical project, and business development skills

Required Skills include:

  • Software development with National Instruments LabVIEW and data acquisition platforms

  • MATLAB

  • An understanding of basic electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, function generators, and impedance analyzers.

Preferred skills and experience include:

  • Background in transduction, analog circuit design, PCB layout, microcontrollers, and acoustic signal processing is preferred.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$86,300.00 - $164,000.00
