Amazon Sr. Mechanical Engineer - Electric Propulsion Development, Project Kuiper in Redmond, Washington

Description

Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and under-served communities around the world.

The Role:

Have you wanted an opportunity to develop electric propulsion systems for an advanced satellite constellation? The Sr. Mechanical Engineer: Electric Propulsion Development will lead a small team working with subsystem owners to support the mechanical design of spacecraft propulsion hardware. This person will also contribute to the mechanical design by identifying means to reduce cost, mass and volume to be traded with performance.

Key job responsibilities

  • Coordinate task prioritization of a small team

  • Perform CAD design work and drawing detailing

  • Define propulsion-specific standards and ensure team compliance with organizational standards

  • Support architecture determination and designing the propulsion system configuration

  • Assist in prototype builds, prototype tests, part modifications and inspecting/testing prototype hardware

  • Support investigations into material and functional non-conformances identified by the production team

Export Control Requirement:

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

About the team

The propulsion integrated product team comprises design, test, system and manufacturing sub-teams tasked -as a unit- with delivering propulsion capabilities to the Kuiper constellation.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

Redmond, WA, USA

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent.

  • 5+ years experience with mechanical design in the aerospace industry

  • 5+ years experience with CAD SW tools (NX, Solidworks etc.)

  • 3+ years experience with spacecraft electrical, thermal, and mechanical environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent.

  • Successful history of transitioning spacecraft hardware from ideation to flight-readiness

  • 5+ years experience with spacecraft electrical, thermal, and mechanical environments

  • 3+ years experience working with Siemens NX

  • 3+ years experience with design for high-vacuum / space environments

  • 5+ years experience with system-level interface documentation.

  • 3+ years experience with project organization tools (e.g. JIRA)

  • 3+ years experience introducing mechanical designs into production environments

  • Experience with system design

  • Experience with part machining, tool-setups and CAM setup/use

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $114,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
