Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital Nursing Manager in Manistique, Michigan

JOB SUMMARY:

Manages day to day nursing operations for Medical-Surgical Unit, and Emergency Department. Coordinates patient care; responsible for supervision of a professional nursing staff and other appropriate staff, administrative and budget management, problem-solving as needed and ensures adherence to hospital policy and nursing standards of practice. Collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary staff. Reports to CNO (Chief Nursing Officer)

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Graduate of an approved school of professional nursing.

  • Bachelor of Science Degree or commensurate experience.

    License/Certification:

  • State of Michigan Registered Nurse license in good standing.

    Training/Experience/Skills:

  • Three to four years of clinical experience, which includes one to two years of experience in a supervisory or charge nurse role.

  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

  • Highly organized person with the ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously.

  • Self-motivated, self-starter with initiative and ability to pro-actively identify opportunities and take action.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team building skills, with participative management style.

  • Excellent knowledge of, and commitment to, the principles and practices of continuous quality improvement.

  • Strong budget preparation and budget control skills.

  • Strong leadership skills, with vision and the ability to gain the commitment of others for change.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff.

  • Ensures training of new employees so they can perform their jobs effectively.

  • Schedules staff and approves time for payroll purposes.

  • Evaluates employee performance, providing feedback, and offering performance improvement plans when needed.

  • Addresses employee behavior in a timely manner. Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.

  • Oversees the daily workflow of the department.

  • Develops and implements new policies and procedures or revises current ones, when warranted.

  • Responsible for department budget.

  • In conjunction with the organizational goals, sets department goals and monitors for compliance.

    ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.

  • Supervise and oversee respective work areas.

  • Scheduling of staff with assistance of Support Clerk.

  • Payroll assistance of Support Clerk.

  • Personnel management (hiring, firing, evaluations, conflicts).

  • Provide operational information to CNO and/or Staff.

  • Responsible for day-to-day operations.

  • Chair monthly department meetings.

  • Responsible for purchases for department.

  • In conjunction with the CNO, create and maintain policies & procedures for respective department.

  • Submit written proposals and reports to CNO as requested.

  • Recommend departmental/staff changes to CNO.

  • In conjunction with CNO and Quality/Compliance Director, develop and execute department QI program. Attend quarterly QI meeting.

  • Establishes yearly departmental goals.

  • Prepares and oversees budget with assistance from CNO and CFO. Review cost center schedule reports.

  • Works with Support Clerk regarding computer training and education.

    JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directs and delegates management of professional and ancillary nursing personnel. Plans and conducts conferences and discussions with administrative and professional nursing staff to encourage participation in the formulating of departmental policies and procedures, solving problems, interpreting new policies and procedures and promote initiative.

  • Coordinates activities of various nursing units, promoting and maintaining harmonious relationships among all personnel and with the medical staff, patients and public.

  • Discusses and meets with CNO concerning budget, goals and strategic planning as it affects nursing.

  • Responsible for reviewing and implementing policies and procedures and standards of care/practice, and assuring that the care is appropriate for patient needs. Obtains approval for policies and procedures from the CNO. Maintains pertinent records needed to run all departments.

  • Works with CNO in planning and implementing orientation and in-service training programs for professional and non-professional nursing staff. Revises new employee programs as needed. Also works with CNO in organizing and scheduling competencies for nursing.

  • Communicates with the CNO in problems involving medical staff or in implementing new services or procedures. Assists with studies as they affect nursing. Works with other agencies and groups in the community to promote the growth and broaden knowledge and skills of the professional staff and improve quality of hospital services.

  • Discusses with CNO, any nursing problem related to the medical staff or any physician problem related to nursing. Assists in resolution of these problems and communicates resolution to nursing personnel.

  • Oversees Trauma Coordinator. Works with Trauma Coordinator and CNO to develop and maintain trauma designation process.

  • Maintains records required by regulatory agencies. Insures that regulations from the Department of Public Health, Critical Access Hospitals and designated entities are followed by the nursing units under supervision.

  • Does performance evaluations on nursing personnel on a yearly basis using the job description appraisal. Is aware of established standards and evaluates nursing performance against these standards. Takes corrective action as indicated. Communicates any special needs to the CNO.
