Definition & Duties

Under general supervision, perform skilled maintenance and mechanical work on small to heavy duty vehicles and equipment, repair hydraulic lifts and a variety of equipment. Inspect vehicles to identify and diagnose malfunctions to determine appropriate repairs.

Knowledge of & Ability to

  • Standard practices, materials, tools, techniques, and principals used in the mechanical repair field

  • Gasoline and diesel engines

  • Mechanically oriented mathematics to determine and set precise standards and tolerances in making repairs

  • Hoists, jacks and related mechanical and hydraulic equipment used in lifting and aligning parts and equipment in repair and maintenance operations

  • Troubleshooting and diagnosis processes and procedures used in repair and preventive maintenance programs

  • Current technology changes in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of equipment

  • Inventory and parts handling procedures

  • Safety policies and procedures related to mechanical equipment including personal protective safety devices and practices

  • Basic computer applications

  • English language to include basic grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation

Ability to:

  • Diagnose and repair malfunctions on small, medium, and heavy duty vehicles and equipment including hydraulic lifts

  • Perform overhaul/repair work, fabrication of parts, and operation of standard testing equipment

  • Represent Johnson County and perform duties in a professional, responsible and trustworthy manner

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, vendors, and the public

  • Understand, follow and interpret basic instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, and schedule form

  • Operate acetylene, arc welding, wire welding, cutting and other equipment safely and in conformance with manufacturer’s recommendations

  • Be detailed-oriented and thorough while performing duties

  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and competing priorities

  • Efficiently use hand and power tools including screwdrivers, drills, wrenches, cutting torch, diagnostic equipment, micrometers, and related equipment

  • Use a computer for the purposes of data entry, spreadsheets, Intranet, and e-mail

  • Collect information and keep accurate records

  • Utilize parts and service manuals as reference documents in making repairs

  • Operate small to heavy duty vehicles including para-transit vehicles and equipment; use Mobile Data Communicators and radio dispatch equipment

  • Be on-call as needed for accidents, vehicle breakdowns, and/or other work related vehicle problems

  • Handle moderate levels of stress, meet deadlines and solve problems appropriate to the position

  • Have clarity of speech and hearing which permits effective communication

  • Have sufficient vision which permits light production and review of a wide variety of materials in both electronic and hardcopy forms

  • Have sufficient manual dexterity to make handwritten notations, perform routine maintenance duties, use hand tools, and which permits light use of a keyboard and mouse

  • Perform moderate to heavy manual labor for extended periods of time

  • Occasionally work in unfavorable weather conditions

  • Lift, move, carry, push and/or pull up to 50 to 100 pounds

  • Stand, sit, bend, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, twist, crouch, and crawl

  • Have sufficient personal mobility to complete work at various locations throughout the county

  • Work flexible schedule and occasional additional hours as needed

Minimum Education, Training & Experience & Special Requirements

Graduation from a technical school or equivalent and 2 years automotive mechanic experience OR any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. ASE certified and prior experience as diesel mechanic preferred.

Special requirements: Possession of a valid Class A commercial driver’s license with passenger endorsement or ability to attain within 2 weeks of hire and insurable under county liability coverage. Safe driving record. Must pass background check, physical exam, drug/alcohol test post-offer and random testing thereafter.

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Perform routine maintenance on a fleet of vehicles including changing oil, checking batteries and lubricating equipment.

  • Change and replace parts such as tires, headlights, belts, and filters as needed.

  • Inspect, adjust, tune, clean, and modify parts to ensure proper operating condition.

  • Perform general overhaul and repair or replacement work on vehicles and maintenance equipment.

  • Weld, braze, and fabricate wheelchair tracks and other parts as necessary.

  • Install new equipment such as radios and Mobile Data Communicators on vehicles to meet operational needs.

  • Operate standard testing equipment to trace and repair malfunctions.

  • Requisition and maintain adequate parts and maintenance supplies. Secure county property to prevent theft.

  • Schedule maintenance for vehicles and keep accurate maintenance and service records.

  • Submit and maintain proper records of supplies, inventory, equipment, equipment repairs, and other related records on computer system.

  • Train others on proper operation of vehicles, wheelchair lifts, and equipment.

  • Perform duties of a Driver as needed.

  • Participate in training/education opportunities and work related meetings/conferences as requested.

  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures, collective bargaining agreement, and safety practices.

  • Attend work regularly at the designated place and time.
