Performs skilled repair and mechanical duties in the maintenance of water systems and facilities. Performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of building, pump stations and treatment plants. Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, lubrications and repairs on various facilities and equipment. Maintains records of time and cost maintenance, including personnel; ensures that necessary parts and equipment are available. Reports unsafe conditions and makes repair recommendations. Coordinates and performs shop work and supervises the maintenance of shop equipment. May train and assign duties to plant personnel.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward position for long periods of time.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works Management Position at the Tier 1 Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mathematical functions as might be acquired through specialized training up to nine months education or training beyond the high school level. May require simple vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment.
One year directly related college or vocational education may be substituted for up to one year of work experience.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three (3) years of building or mechanical maintenance are required or one (1) year as an operator trainee and two years in building or mechanical maintenance.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
A valid Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).
PREFERENCES
Preference will also be given to candidates with training and experience in the corrective and preventive maintenance programs related to equipment such as pump repair, chlorine and ammonia analyzer, and chemical application equipment.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
