Summary

The Occupational Health Nurse is responsible for the prevention, recognition, and treatment of on-the-job illness and injuries. This position requires skills and knowledge in health and safety education, counselling, environmental health, safety, rehabilitation, and human relations.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a primary resource on health matters, reviewing such items as physicians' reports on employee health, workers' compensation insurance claims, medical restrictions on employee work, and the policies and procedures for employee

  • wellness programs

  • Provide first aid and assist employees who are injured or become ill at work

  • Document, investigate, and manage work-related injuries and illnesses, including Workers’ Compensation claims

  • Manage return to work approval process

  • Provide support to ensure compliance with select Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) standards

  • Develop and implement health promotion programs such as ergonomics, health fairs, awareness campaigns, on-site flu shots, blood drives, exercise, healthy eating programs, etc.

  • Perform pre-employment health screening and drug screening processes

  • Develop professional relationships with local occupational clinics and collaborate with other Health Care Providers to support the worker through the recovery process

  • Participate in applicable safety meetings and investigations

  • Maintain medical supplies inventory and inspection

  • Maintain cleanliness at work-site in accordance with 5S3R Standards:

  • Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain

  • Right Location, Right Quantity, Right Container

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required or equivalent, relevant experience

  • Current registered nursing license in the state of Michigan

Experience:

  • 3 to 6 + years of occupational health or critical care nursing experience required

  • Occupational health and safety experience and OSHA training in a manufacturing environment is desired

  • Prior experience with Michigan Worker's Compensation case management and claims management desired

  • Experience as a trainer for health and safety topics such as First Aid/CPR, Blood borne Pathogens is preferred

Skills:

  • Knowledge of state and federal laws related to Worker’s Compensation, and legislation regarding confidentiality

  • Excellent written communication skills and will be expected to document decisions, agreements, and orders created

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite or related software

  • Communicate effectively with employees, physicians/medical professionals, and other outside parties

  • Analyse and make sound judgments to accurately document and maintain appropriate confidentiality of medical records

  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed to support production team and off-hour emergencies
