City of Fairhope Water Operator II in Fairhope, Alabama

Description

Under the supervision of the Chief Water Operator, the employee monitors available water supplies, samples and tests water daily, maintains records for all testing procedures, tests and disinfects new water lines, installs water meters, repairs water leaks and maintains water treatment plant equipment and maintains water plant buildings and grounds. The employee inspects treatment plant equipment to ensure operational effectiveness and proper functioning. This employee adjusts equipment as needed to ensure proper functioning. The employee reads gauges, charts, and graphs. This employee operates pumps, valves and motors used in the treatment process. The employee cleans tanks and other facilities used in treatment. This employee collects water samples for testing and analyzes samples for quality control purposes. This employee prepares and maintains records associated with equipment monitoring and sample testing. This employee sets up temporary water service lines for special events. The employee monitors service vehicles for maintenance or repair needs and performs some maintenance functions. This employee handles chemicals used in water treatment. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to a pre-employment background check and random drug screens.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Water Treatment Plant Operations. Performs full range of Grade II water treatment operations and duties.

  1. Monitors water supply levels on a daily basis.
  2. Samples and performs standardized tests on water daily.
  3. Tests and disinfects water lines.
  4. Monitors treatment plant equipment for water quality indicators and other operating purposes.
  5. Monitors treatment supplies inventory; orders new supplies when needed.
  6. Maintains records for all water quality tests; makes reports to regulatory agencies (ADEM and EPA).
  7. Utilizes a variety of chemicals to treat water supplies at plant.
  8. Operates equipment and vehicles used at treatment plant.
  9. Maintains water treatment plant building and grounds.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Non-Treatment Plant Duties. Performs various tasks not associated with treatment plant operations.

  1. Installs and repairs water meters.
  2. Repairs water line leaks.
  3. Sets up temporary water service lines for special events.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Equipment and Vehicle Operation. Operates service trucks and other equipment used at treatment plant and outside the treatment plant.

  1. Operates service truck at treatment plant and throughout the service area.
  2. Operates other equipment at the treatment plant and throughout the service area.
  3. Monitors all vehicles and equipment for needed maintenance or repairs; performs limited maintenance on service truck.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:

Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  2. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama Grade II Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification.
  3. Minimum of three (3) years of experience in public water treatment facility operations.
  4. Possess a current and valid drivers license; must be insurable.
  5. Ability to work overtime and non-standard hours when required.
  6. Ability to travel to attend professional development workshops or training programs.
  7. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.
