Johns Hopkins University Research Assistant in Baltimore, Maryland

The Physics & Astronomy department is looking to hire a Research Assistant with relevant skills needed to assist in the research support to accelerate the production and publication of the multi-scale stellar association catalogs, for use by our team and for release to the community as promised by our Treasury programs.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform analysis of Hubble Space Telescope data acquired for the PHANGS collaboration as part of HST programs GO-15654, 17502, 17457: PHANGS-HST: Linking Stars and Gas throughout the Scales of Star Formation, Resolving gas, star formation and feedback in nearby galaxies with an HST+JWST+ALMA Treasury, and Zooming in on HII regions: a comprehensive view of dust attenuation and embedded star formation in local galaxies.

  • Specific duties will focus on the construction, validation, and science exploration of catalogs describing the multi-scale stellar associations in PHANGS galaxies. Work will be conducted in collaboration with Drs. Thilker (JHU), Lee (STScI), and Larson (STScI).

  • Report weekly progress to the team.

  • Produce final dataset for archival and publication ready material, contribute to the write-up of the science papers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.

  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physics or Astronomy.

  • Expertise with UV-visible astronomy and related data analysis.

  • Familiarity with Python programming language.

Starting Salary Range: $17.00 - $30.00 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)

Employee group: Full Time

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9 am - 5 pm
